Range

Zeroes

Algebraic: Set \(y=0\) in \(y=f(x)\). So search for all \(x\) for which
\[f(x)=0\]
Sign Behavior
Definition: determine the sign (positive, negative, or zero) of the image \(y\) as the argument \(x\) goes through the domain.
Method: Sign diagram with \(+\), \(-\), \(0\) and \(|\)
Increasing and Decreasing
-
• \(f\) is increasing in an interval \(I\) if for the \(x\)-values \(a,b \in I\) with \(a < b\) it holds that
\[f(a) \leq f(b)\]
-
• \(f\) is decreasing in an interval \(I\) if for the \(x\)-values \(a,b \in I\) with \(a < b\) it holds that
\[f(a) \geq f(b)\]
-
• \(f\) that is both increasing and decreasing in an interval \(I\) is called constant on that interval \(I\)
Method: Diagram with \(\nearrow \) and \(\searrow \)
Extrema
-
• real number \(m\) is the minimum of \(f\) on an interval \(I\) if for all \(x\in I:\)
\[f(x)\geq m\;.\]
-
• real number \(M\) is the maximum of \(f\) on an interval \(I\) if for all \(x\in I:\)
\[f(x)\leq M\;.\]
